style=\"color: #8b7479;\">Chuckanut Sandstone (fossils 50 mya), 3 x 40 x 30\u2019<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"> Big Rock Sculpture Park, Bellingham, WA, 2009\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">Sea Change \/ See Change\u00a0is a contemplative space evoking a profound connection to earth\u2019s deep geologic time.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0It is a site-specific installation with \u2018found\u2019 materials, local fossil-filled Chuckanut sandstone, the remainders of a mountain landslide provided to the artist by the City of Bellingham\u00a0Parks Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">This installation is a three-dimensional form of the artist&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"><a title=\"Ink Paintings: \u201cEnso\u201d and Gesture 1980-1990\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jfuhrman.com\/wordpress\/works-on-paper-2\/ink-paintings-gesture-1980-1990\/\"><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">Zen <em>enso<\/em><\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"> ink calligraphic paintings. Stones are placed in two opposing curved forms in a gestural, asymmetrical oval shape with two openings, creating a sense of \u2018holding, but not \u2018capturing\u2019. The installation is a <em>koan<\/em>: asking an unanswerable question, yet offering a path.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">The stones are filled with 50,000,000 year old fossils of palm fronds and deciduous leaves and branches. \u201cI am profoundly connected to eons of geologic process\u2014to the earth\u2019s deep geologic time\u2014of continuing change and transformation\u2014of my place in time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">The title\u00a0<em>Sea Change<\/em> first comes in Ariel\u2019s evocative song in Shakespeare\u2019s <em>Tempest<\/em>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"> <em>Full fathom five thy father lies:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"> <em>Of his bones are coral made:<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"> <em>Those are pearls that were his eyes:<br \/>\nNothing of him that doth fade<br \/>\nBut doth suffer a sea-change<br \/>\nInto something rich and strange.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">The expression for this work has threefold implications: monumental transformation; the literal sense of <em>sea change,<\/em> in the fossils; and the current sense of the sea changing in today\u2019s ecologic climate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\">A vital part of the work was the collaborative nature of the actual building\u2026from idea\u2014to laptop computer\u2014to field drawing\u2014to choosing from available stones\u2014to work and installation by City of Bellingham Parks Department. Perhaps the people who actually had their hands on it took away the most from the piece. Comments from installers and viewers:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s hard being the artist\u2019s brush.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a dance with two elements.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cThere is a duality: \u00a0separation and pulling together\u201d.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #8b7479;\"><em>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u201cI was drawn back.
